Leaded Fuel Engines
If your car is sufficiently old (1974 or earlier), the engine was built to require leaded gasoline. Unfortunately, such gasoline is not available today. If you still need to use your car with today's unleaded gasoline, do whatever you can to prevent the engine from getting unnecessarily hot. Consider taking these precautions:
- Do not overwork engine. Keep the engine at low speed in low gear.
- Keep the cooling system operating efficiently.
- Enrich the fuel/air mixture at the carburetor slightly.
- Consider using a lead substitute additive with your gasoline.
- Have a valve job done and install hardened valve components.
